The illustrator career includes a wide array of different types of art and artists. Illustrators can create designs for books, companies, decorations, and much more. Depending on where the illustrators work, they made need a college education in art or a related art major. Many illustrators work freelance which requires you to have good organizational skills and networking skills. One of the parts of illustration that I am very interested in is book illustrations. This includes book covers as well as illustrations to accompany stories. Most of the top art colleges have an illustration major.

Rhode Island School of Design has a highly ranked illustration program. VCU is also a strong school for illustration in the area.

The estimated pay of this job is around $65,000 for a hired illsutrator and $60,000 for a freelance illsutrator.

This was the first lunchtime lecture that I have been able to attend. I was lucky to be able to introduce the artist Noelani Jones before her talk. I found it fascinating to hear about how she makes her art since I have no experience in fiber art.

One of the most interesting parts of her talk was when she talked about her materials and how most of them are handmade by her or are found from discarded waste. I have heard of artists recycling and creating materials to make their art but getting to see the final product was very special. I think it is inspiring and makes me want to see how I could employ a similar strategy in my work even when I use different mediums.

After hearing her lecture, I wonder where she got her interest in fiber art. I have a difficult time deciding on a specific medium I want to focus on and I have hardly considered fiber art. I find her work very interesting and I wonder what pushed her to learn weaving instead of any other medium.

I also wonder what her experience becoming established has been like. I am interested in doing art, at least part-time, in the future, so this is something I would like to know more about.

I love how you can tell her work is inspired by the natural world, rather than just being made from natural materials. She has a piece that looks like a deer and that one really interested me. A lot of the nature she gets inspired from is where she is at the time of making a specific piece. She used the gray and monotone Vermont nature to create pieces with muted color palettes. Where I live is very different from that, so it would inspire my art in the opposite way.

I have heard the words "Art Director" thrown around a lot when talking about different art careers. I have alwasy had my assumptions what that might entail, but in this post I wanted to explore fully what the Art Director job consists of. Art directors exist in any field where creativity and oragnization are required. An art director's main job is to curate a creative image for advertising and public image. They make sure concepts stay consistent and help create an atmosphere for customers. They are similar to film directors in that they have a vision and direct others on how to help that vision come to life. Leadership is a very important responsibility for this job. In order to be an art director, you are required to have a bachelor's degree in a related field. It is also very helpful to be established as an artist and as a leader in order to be hired. University of Pennsylvania is one of the top colleges for getting an education to become an art director. VCU is also a notable school that is close to us that offers a great education that can help for this job. The majors most associated with this job are graphic design and visual communications.
